Roeder History

Christmas, 1956  The following pictures were taken November/December, 1956, personalities yet to be identified at the US Embassy, Cairo, Egypt.

Picture 1 might be of Doctors from Namru and Picture picture might be as well, plus perhaps spouse of one of the doctors.  NAMRU was US Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU), Cairo

Pictures 3-7 appear to have been taken in the Consular section of the US Embassy, which Dad ran.

Pictures 11-12 were taken at a party in my house, perhaps at reception for Ricardo Montalban.

Pictures 8-10 might have been taken at a party across from our apartment building in Maidi.

Picture 9 one of a set with this woman and puppies.

Picture of Hamid, personal aide, my father, mother and the Consulate mascot "Sassy" are also shown.

Egypt002.jpg  There was a Dr. Holmes and wife Eleanor and children at NAMRu.  I wonder if this is them.  They were evacuated with us (at least the wife and children) during Suez War.

Ricardo Montalban and my father's staff in the US Embassy, 1957.  Picture by Larry Winter Roeder

November, 1956  Hamid.  Worked for my father.  Great guy.  Remember him very well.  Drove us to the airport on final departure from Egypt, providing me life lessons all the way to the airport.

"Sassy," an Egyptian wild cat who adopted our family as a kitten when abandoned in the desert outside Maidi.  During the Sue War became the mascot for the Embassy and was awarded a special passport by the Consular Staff "Kingdom of Catland."
